Dr. Kopelman is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. (1980). He completed his internship/residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital/University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1983). His fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiac Electrophysiology was at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN (1985), where he also held an appointment as an Instructor in Medicine. Subsequently, he spent two years in academic medicine which included appointments as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Philadelphia Heart Institute (1988).

Under his direction, the Atlanta Cardiology Group founded a comprehensive Cardiac Arrhythmia program at Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta, and, in 1989, became the first center in the State of Georgia to open a dedicated Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratory. After 18 years, during which time Dr. Kopelman played a central role in strategic planning and development for Atlanta Cardiology and Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta in key leadership positions including Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Co-Chairman of the Heart and Vascular Institute Board, he moved to the newly formed Piedmont Heart Institute in November 2007. He assumed leadership roles including Director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratories and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Supply Chain Initiatives.

Dr. Kopelman has authored and co-authored a number of papers in highly refereed medical journals.

Dr. Kopleman is board certified in Internal Medicine (1983) and the subspecialties of Cardiovascular Disease (1985) and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (1992, recertification 2002).
